OUR RESIDENCY

Welcome to Orient Lighthouse Artist Residency!

Experience the unique opportunity to stay and create at the historic Orient Lighthouse. This secluded and inspiring environment offers artists a chance to immerse themselves in their work while enjoying the rugged beauty and tranquility of the lighthouse. Below, you will find essential information to ensure a safe and comfortable stay.

Safety and Precautions

Release Form
Upon confirmation of your residency, you will receive an email with a link to fill out our release form. Please ensure that everyone in your party completes this form. While we have taken numerous safety precautions, the lighthouse remains inherently unsafe, not childproof, and not suitable for pets. Constant vigilance and care are necessary to avoid accidents or injuries.

Fog Horns
Be prepared for loud fog horns, which are triggered manually by mariners reporting fog conditions. They can be startling and potentially harmful to hearing. For relief, go inside and move to higher floors or the opposite side of the terrace. The noise is usually brief unless severe fog persists.

Water Supply
Fresh water is available through a seawater-to-freshwater maker. Use the 5-gallon jug dispenser, and for added safety, filter the water through the stainless-steel filter next to the dispenser. Do not operate the water maker unless it’s an emergency. If needed, follow the QuickStart guide and call for assistance. Adding bleach (eight drops per gallon) is recommended for untreated water stored for long periods. A Berkey charcoal filter is available for final filtration.

Food and Cooking
Basic food staples are provided, but please bring your own preferred supplies. Cooking is limited to propane gas cooktops, which must be used outdoors. Propane bottles are available, but bringing extra small bottles is advisable.

Solar Refrigerator
A small Sunfrost refrigerator is available. Keep it cold by adding liquid-filled containers. The freezer operates even during power outages. Always ensure the door is closed tightly.

Heating and Appliances
Use the propane heater with caution, ensuring it is not near anything combustible. The wood stove is currently unsafe and should not be used. For small appliances like the espresso machine, use the outdoor generator only, and never operate it indoors.

Facilities and Amenities

Bedding
Bring your own clean set of sheets and pillowcases. Additional sleeping bags, pillows, and blankets are available, but laundry facilities are limited. Pile all used bedding at the end of your stay.

Composting Toilet
The composting toilet should not need emptying during your stay. Use peat moss after significant use. If it becomes full, transfer waste to a 5-gallon pail and leave it for disposal. Avoid the lower level where the composting tank is located due to safety hazards.

Fire Safety
Fire extinguishers are located on every floor. Familiarize yourself with their locations upon arrival.

Energy and Communication

Solar Power
The lighthouse is powered by solar energy. Avoid touching the batteries and Coast Guard equipment. Power is limited to essentials like phone charging, the refrigerator, and small appliances. Larger tools and lights require the generator. Power may run low at night but typically restores with morning sunlight.

Marine and Other Radios
A handheld marine radio tuned to channel 16 is available for emergencies. While other radios are present, use them only if licensed or in emergencies.

Internet and Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available. Cell phone service is generally reliable.

Housekeeping and Usage Guidelines

Doors and Windows
Secure doors with bungee cords to prevent damage from sudden winds. Feel free to open windows but close them during inclement weather or before leaving.

Bugs and Spiders
Expect some insects and spiders. Repellent is provided but should not be used on your body. This location may not be suitable for those with severe arachnophobia.

Fishing and Water Safety
Fishing is permitted with guidance from Captain Bob. Swimming around the lighthouse is dangerous and strictly prohibited. Life jackets must be worn when near the water.

Furniture and Outdoor Areas
Bring in any lightweight furniture before leaving to prevent it from being damaged. Use indoor and outdoor spaces responsibly, ensuring all items are secure from wind and weather.
